About the artist and their work
The lithuanian artist Vytautas Kaunas is well known not only in Lithuania but also in various European countries, especially Germany and Holland. The traditional style of paintings which dominated in Lithuania may be regarded as the national adaptation of expressionism and other trends of European Modernism.
The creative works of V. Kaunas reflect his anxious and romantic spirit which pervades the entire philosophical outlook of the artist. The dynamic harmony of rhythms and colours shows richness of the artist’s imagination. V.Kaunas is not simply following the external patterns: he creates his own imaginal aesthetic space where differently arranged elements represent his own attitudes and feelings. A state of the artist`s consciousness determines a structure of every composition. Any painted image is turned into a sing which indicates a state of being experienced by the painter. Two things are important for V.Kaunas : sincerity and beauty. He tries to avoid ugliness, be it real or imagined. The artist follows a middle way between the extremes. However, his creative works radiate some mysterious light. V. Kaunas appeals directly to our heart and suggest that our life is worthy to be lived and enjoyed, despite of any illusions, fictions, or superstitions produced by the collective paradigms and ideologies. Therefore the artist seeks to show his inner freedom and reveals the special relationship between his own self and the experienced phenomena.
